Three weeks passed without a single scene for Diana. She had her fill of pleasure whenever she desired it — the trunk of sex toys in her closet guaranteed that — but she knew that Nick was not having his fill of the same. If he had been having orgasms, he would not be jumping out of his skin every time she touched him. The Sundays that he once spent at the club were now spent at her apartment, working on his autobiography.

Having him over that often was necessary. Although he wanted her credited as his coauthor, she would really be more of a ghostwriter. Diana had never been a ghostwriter before. She knew some people who did it for a living, however, and she asked them for tips. There turned out to be a lot more to the job than she had ever suspected.

Her client was to be less of a boss and more of a partner. It was a collaboration, one where she was meant to coax the story of a life from her client. She coaxed Nick’s story from him with ease. Even throughout the week, he would send her texts or short emails about different memories. She learned about him a piece at a time, and in return, she found herself telling him things about her. Small things. Her favorite food, her favorite books, and so on.

Unlike the horror story clients she had heard about from her ghostwriter friends, he proved to be decent. More than decent, in all honesty. When she offered suggestions, he would listen to them, often going through with them. When he came on Sundays bearing notebooks full of things he had jotted down through the week, things far too long for texts or emails, he would ask for her honest opinion. When she taught him something, he learned it.

“You’re less demanding about this than I thought you would be,” she had said in an offhand way one evening.

“That’s because you’re the expert here.” He had stretched out his legs under the coffee table. “If you were in my kitchen asking me to make a big meal for everybody to eat, I’d tell you to get out of the way. Here, you’re the cook. I can’t touch the stove — I’m just setting up the table.”

Not everything was so uncomplicated about their collaboration. The entire time they worked, he would be on edge. A not-so-accidental brush of her fingers against his arm would get him instantly hard. She made sure to brush against him accidentally as often as she could.

Then things changed without warning. It took her completely by surprise, and she did not enjoy surprises. On their third Sunday of work, Nick did not show at her apartment. He hadn’t texted, hadn’t called. What irritated her most about this development was that she had started expecting him. His absence left a space.

Diana had grown attached.

Realizing that startled her. She could not pinpoint when she had begun feeling that way. It had happened without her wanting it to, and she was stuck with an empty place beside her.
